Let them eat cake!

Brunstad- our workplace, our home.
We had the welcome feast for the new A-lag last Thursday evening. I realized a few weeks ago (with a lump in my throat) that this would be my last start-up or ending feast here on A-lag. We have an A-lag feast every month, but the start-up and ending feasts are the big ones with 350 people in the hall. I wanted to do something cool for the last big cake, and we came up with this design. Stephen and Jenni wanted to help and then Laurel showed up and we had a lot of fun with this one! We started putting it together right after dinner on Wednesday and left one hour before the breakfast shift started the next morning! We ran into a couple of snags, including the ganache setting up before we had a chance to smooth it, so we borrowed a hair dryer and melted the top again. And again. And again. The cake was dark chocolate with a custard, butter cream filling and glazed with a coffee and liqueur flavored ganache. Thanks for all the help, guys! I couldn't have done it without you!
The entire cake was made up of 18 cakes - 9 in each layer (I hope that makes more sense, Kris!)
Leveling the cakes It was already getting late at this point...!!
Re-melting the glaze
The clock gives away the time here...
We wrote the names of everyone on A-lag and those who work with A-lag in white chocolate, but some of the names broke as we were putting them on, and we also ran out of space, so not quite everyone made it onto the cake. It was fun to see everyone searching for their name and taking pictures of it during the feast!
The final product - with quite a few flaws, but still a fun cake! And everyone loved it!
It was an intense week but full of good stuff! I am an aunt, again, to Maia Jordin! She is the sweetest thing and Madison is an adorable and proud big sister! To see pictures, go HERE. I can't wait to see her and spoil her too! I heart little people! Jane invited a couple of us to her place in Oslo this weekend. We went out to an awesome Indian restaurant yesterday evening to celebrate Christa's 40th birthday. I'll post pics tomorrow if I get the chance! Tomorrow we say goodbye to January and hello to another month of opportunity! It's a short, but good'n, and I'm looking forward to it - snow, ice, freezing, AEG and all!!
